Our curriculum is designed so that children will make strong progress in history.
Through carefully planned sequential units of work and lessons, pupils will be able to recall key historical knowledge and have an understanding of chronology and the characteristic features of periods and societies. Throughout EYFS, KS1 and KS2, links will be made between historical periods and events and schemata deepened and developed. Themes (legacy, expansion and migration/invasion) will be revisited throughout different units of work and comparisons made. From developing their understanding of themselves and their families in EYFS, learning about significant people and events in KS1 and then broader periods of history in KS2 the history curriculum has been designed so that key concepts and knowledge are built upon and revised so that knowledge is embedded in long-term memory. Pupils will gain an understanding of change and continuity and cause and consequence as they learn about history.
Pupils will be given the opportunity to evaluate and analyse a range of sources and begin to draw conclusions from evidence around historical events. Historical enquiry skills will be cultivated as pupils are encouraged to deduce understanding and draw conclusions from evidence. Oracy is a key aspect of classroom practice which provides pupils with opportunities to deepen their understanding through dialogue with teachers and peers. The development of tier 3 vocabulary is logically sequenced and historical vocabulary is built on each year. Pupils will be given opportunities to visit places of interest which will deepen their understanding of history.
