COMPUTING

Our curriculum is designed so that children will make strong progress in Computing and have equality of access to appropriate hardware.

Through our Computing Curriculum at Hawkedon, we aim to provide children with the life skills to enable them to utilise new technology in a socially responsible way that will allow them to become confident, respectful and safe users in an ever-changing digital world.

The curriculum will teach children key knowledge about how computers and computer systems work, and how they are designed and programmed. Pupils will have the opportunity to utilise leading educational software to develop their computational thinking, design and build programs, websites and communicate using different multimedia applications. Through exposing meaningful links, planning will support the wider curriculum allowing children to apply their skills in other contexts and showcase their learning using technology in subjects such as English, Geography and Science. In addition, the computing curriculum will develop skills such as creativity, resilience, critical thinking and problem-solving and actively encourage the wider application of these skills within school life..

By the time they leave Hawkedon, children will have gained key knowledge and skills in the four key areas.

  •  computer science (programming and understanding how digital systems work),
  • information technology (using computer systems to store, retrieve and send information)
  • digital literacy (evaluating digital content and using technology safely and respectfully).
  • online safety

Through careful progression of skills, revisited in each year group, the objectives within each strand support the development of learning across the key stages, ensuring a solid grounding for future study.
